Thando Keys is a Mamelodi pianist who plays Sunday service and Friday sets in the same week, and can't see why anyone would keep them apart. His soulful Amapiano is built on gospel-trained piano runs over emotional log drums, with gentle isiZulu and English hooks. Humble to a fault, he'd rather the piano took the applause.
His debut album, Same Hands, is the story of how the church keyboard ended up on club speakers. A song from a passing car ("Passing Car") keeps him up all night working out the chords; the same hands that played for the choir now play the floor ("Same Hands," "Church Keyboard, Club Speakers," "Sunday Into Friday Night"). In between are thank-yous to the people who raised him: "Umama," "My Father's Hands," "Gogo's Radio Still Plays," "Ngiyabonga."
The second album, Jacaranda, is a love letter to Pretoria in October, when the streets turn purple. It wanders from Ma's kitchen to a rooftop in Hatfield, from a load-shedding love song by candlelight to the train to Joburg, and ends on the lawns of the Union Buildings at sunset.
Warm, grateful and quietly brilliant, Thando Keys brings joy without the noise. He records for Piano Nation, Squaredrum's home for Amapiano and Afro house, created under human creative direction with AI-assisted music.
